What is
15 MARCH?

The United Nations’ International Day to Combat Islamophobia is observed on March 15th every year. The day was chosen to mark the anniversary of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand, where 51 people were killed. This hate crime was perpetrated by an Australian-born right wing extremist who was convicted of terrrorism in New Zealand. This is the worst terrorist attack in the history of Australia and New Zealand.

It is the United Nations’ call for the promotion of a culture of tolerance and peace, based on respect for human rights and for the diversity of religions and belief across the globe.

What is
Islamophobia?

Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness.

Islamophobia is increasingly understood by researchers, and international bodies not merely as an irrational fear or personal prejudice, but as a systemic, structural, and institutional form of governance. This framework suggests that Islamophobia is a "system of governing" that uses power to marginalize, exclude, and control Muslim communities, often under the guise of security or national identity. It affects the ability of Australians who are Muslim, or perceived to be Muslim, to feel safe, valued and included.

Islamophobia is often used interchangeably with anti-Muslim hate which is often considered to be a less pathologising and more appropriate term.

Countering Islamophobia Project

The Countering Islamophobia project is focused on:

Empowering Victorians to respond more effectively to anti-Muslim hate by holding racists accountable.
Supporting Victorians to avoid thinking traps and hold racists accountable with actionable strategies.
Raising awareness of the International Day to Combat Islamophobia on 15 March.

The project collaborates widely with over a dozen key grassroots community institutions in Victoria. Join the movement here!
